New Photo Album - Columbia River Gorge"ous"

Well now it's spring and everyonce in a while in between the grey, drizzly skies we do get sun.  And this happened to be one of those days.  Since I live in Vancouver, Wash. I thought about taking a little road trip out along the Columbia River Gorge along the Washington side, cross the "Bridge of the Gods" (Which is the first eastern bridge from the Vancouver/Portland area), and then head back home via the Oregon side.  Probably not more than a 3-4 hour trip.

My first stop was a very narrow shoulder-turn off that gave a great view of the "entry" into the gorge from the western most point.   Next was Beacon Rock.  A huge monolith of a rock!  My altitude judgement isn't worth beans but I'll take a stab and say it's at least 1,000 feet....and nearly straight up on all sides.  Because it was too close to the highway and hidden by trees along the side of the road, I had to drive up into the Beacon Rock State Park to get the images I did.

I then came up on the Cascade Locks and the Fort Cascade Historic Site.  Considering the Columbia River is fairly wide in this area, I only was able to see the dam section.  Because this was only a road trip, I didn't bring ANY money and the "Bridge of the Gods" is a toll bridge and I didn't think they would accept a debit card.  Unfortunately the whole foray was cut in half as I had to travel the same route back home.

Yeah...what a dope.

"Hiking in Palm Springs" album

A couple of years ago my friend Jason and I, wanting to get out of San Diego for the day, headed up to Palm Springs to go hiking.  Those that live in Southern Callifornia are probably thinking "why would you wanna go hiking in the desert?"  Not looking for any sweaty challenges, we headed 8,000 feet up to the top of a mountain.  Entering Palm Springs from the south, there is a tall "Welcome to Palm Springs" sign which marks a narrow two lane road which disappears into canyon.  At the end of the road, there are multiple parking lots from which you can board a tram up to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway http://www.pstramway.com/.  The cable cars have been recently replaced by ones of a Sweedish design in which the cable cars rotate 360 degrees while moving up and down the mountain - guaranteeing a visitor an obstructed view of the sheer cliff faces and of the desert floor below.  At the top of mountain, one will find that the temperature has dropped significantly from the sometimes unbearable heat from the desert floor.  There is also a restaurant with a nice buffet.  Beyond the lodge, is a beautiful forest complete with camping grounds.

"My Navy Days" album

My Military Days - This is a compilation of photos including my active duty days and as a Navy contractor. I entered Navy boot camp in Orlando, Florida on Sept. 13, 1988, after which I stayed in Orlando to attend Quartermaster "A" school. USS Marvin Shields (FF-1066) was my first ship out of boot camp. I spent from March 1989 to its decommissioning in July 1992 as a crewmember. During Shield/Desert Storm, we served mainly to protect the logistic ships in the Persian Gulf. We were the first West Coast ship back from the war. After the Shields' decommissioning, I was ordered to the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) http://www.kittyhawk.navy.mil/.Once again, we found ourselves pummeling Iraq again but when you are on an aircraft carrier the only action you see is all the sorties of aircraft taking off and landing. My favorite thing about being on an aircraft carrier was seeing the bright exhaust from the F-14 Tomcats when at full throttle. After being on the USS Kitty Hawk I received orders to the NATO base in Keflavik, Iceland as a career counselor. After Iceland, I came back to San Diego and joined Assault Craft Unit One in Coronado http://www.acu1.navy.mil/index3.htm. This particular unit I probably found the most fun. A Navy LCU (Landing Craft Unit) is one of the ways Marines get from a ship to their insertion point on the beach. Along with its 12 man crew, an LCU can transport 300 combat loaded soldiers and up to 3-M1A1 tanks.

Photo Album Descriptions

Aerials - After purchasing a digital camera I went hog wild with the amount of pictures I was taking.  When I was working as a Navy contractor, I had to fly over to the Persian Gulf several times and once in a while I would see some cool things.  The pictures here are taken flying out of London, England, Oahu, Hawaii and flying into Los Angeless.  These were taken with an Olympus D-580.

Aqaba Jordan - While on one of my overseas trips in 2002, I was sent to one of the amphibious ships which was having problems with a computer system.  Luckily they were heading to port because after being cooped up on a ship in a hot as hell environment and no alcohol - I was ready to hit land.  Acqaba is a small little town that is situated on the very northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba which is a finger of water that connects to the Red Sea.  Because of the terrorist activity, the Sailors and Marines could not leave the pier that the ships were tied to.  Me being civilian, I was able to stay at a very nice hotel with it's own beach.  Along with my own pics, there are some nice pics at

Iceland - I was stationed at the NATO base in Keflavik, Iceland from June 1996 to December 1998.  It's really hard for those stationed on the West Coast to be transferred to the East Coast let alone Europe.  But I had just been promoted and was asked where I wanted to go.  I told the guy anywhere in Europe.  Iceland was all he had and that was fine by me.  It's such a gorgeous country even without the tall tree forests that people are used to.  The Vikings and early settlers of Iceland pretty much chopped down all the trees so needless to say there aren't many trees more than 20 feet or so high.  Plus with the constant volcanic activity, it's hard to grown anything except for moss on a lava flow....even one several hundreds of years old.  Since only having been there for just about two years, I didn't get to take it all in but here's a good start point if you want to learn/see more  http://www.icelandreview.com/ and some more beautiful pics at http://www.benoa.net/iceland/index.html

Hawaii 2004 - During the summer of 2004, I took my last trip as a Navy Contractor with the USS John C. Stennis Battle Group.  After an awesome trip to Anchorage and Seward, Alaska the battle group traveled down to the warmer waters of Oahu.  I departed from the Stennis and spent a few days on Oahu.

Petra - You might remember seeing this place in the movie Indian Jones.  Here's a website that contains some factual information:   http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Anthropology/Petra/
